Helping the Helper Workshop Series
From the 2007 series, we present the following resources:

Making Change Work: Gail Gibson, Leadership in Action

Most leaders and managers, although already accomplished at what they do, seek the additional skill sets required for successful change management. This workshop examined perspectives on change and provided the thoughts, tools and techniques that leaders require to ensure change is thoughtfully managed and successful.

Tips and Tools for Developing Effective Work Teams: Thea Vakil and Cindy Vallance, School of Public Administration, University of Victoria

In all organizations, including non profits, leaders have learned that effective management of human capital is central to organizational success. They also recognize that teamwork is a key strategy in achieving the organization’s goals. People working together are more creative, find better solutions and generally accomplish more. This workshop provided information to non-profit organizations planning to create strong and effective work teams.

Breathing Life into Your Strategic Plan: Bill Reid, Elevate Consulting

In the non-profit sector, there is real value in having a living, breathing strategic plan, one that provides a blueprint for achieving an organization’s vision. At the same time, there are real challenges in dedicating the time and resources needed to achieve this blueprint. This facilitated learning discussion explored the tools and techniques needed to develop and implement strategic plans that are meaningful, work for your organization and its partners, and serve as a needed guide for moving forward.

Beyond the Basics: Ways to Make Your Board More Effective: Gilda Good and Vic Murray, The Centre for Non Profit Management

Many boards of directors do a satisfactory job of reviewing their organization’s plans and budgets but could do much more to help them achieve their missions. This workshop discussed a number of new ways of creating “high value added” boards and allowed exploration of how feasible these ideas are for your organization. The workshop's audience included board chairpersons and executive directors in all types of non profit and voluntary organizations. Board committee members and staff who work closely with board committees or officers will also benefit from this information.
